Akhenaten (pronounced / ˌ æ k ə ˈ n ɑː t ən /), also spelled Echnaton, Akhenaton, Ikhnaton, and Khuenaten (Ancient Egyptian: ꜣḫ-n-jtn, meaning "Effective for the Aten"), was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh reigning c. 1353–1336 or 1351–1334 BC, the tenth ruler of the Eighteenth Dynasty.
The image of Aton is presented as a sun disk with its rays ending in human hands. Although Akhenaton has been considered by some as the world's first monotheist, the religion of the Aton may best be described as monolatry, the worship of one god in preference to all others. In fact, Akhenaton's god consistently incorporated multiple aspects of the traditional divinized sun, such as Re-Harakhte (the rising sun ), Shu (atmosphere and sunlight), and Maat (daughter of Re ).
